Pointers When Making Your Graduate Essay

When an essay is one of your admission requirements, it pays to start early. Giving yourself enough time would allow you to think about your essay and revise it as necessary. Some colleges use standardized essay questions but there are also those that don’t, so be sure to read the instructions prior to starting your essay. Either way, the objective of the school is to assess how well you communicate your thoughts, and how cohesive you are. While on the topic of reading instructions, you should take note of the maximum word count as well.

When writing admissions essays, it is often best if you adopt a conversational tone without being too familiar, sarcastic, or comical. You would not want to be regarded as someone who do not take things seriously, or someone too formal to the point of being rigid. A touch of humor can be good to lighten the tone of your essay, but overdoing it can make your essay more foolish than clever. Avoid sounding too proud also when you’re asked to make an essay about your experiences or accomplishments. Resist the urge to embellish your story to make you more interesting.

Frame your thoughts in a way that will hold your reader’s attention the moment they start reading your essay. However, a a good essay requires more than just a compelling first sentence. Your ideas should be organized and flow in a logical manner to keep your reader hooked. Transitions can help make your essay achieve that cohesive feel.

Grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors will distract your reader and give them a hard time to understand your essay. That said, you should not forget to proofread your essay. If you’re not very confident about your skills, have someone review your work.
